For no good reason, this month we present a fairly minor tribute to Elzie Segar and/or the animated Fleischer studios Popeye - with Kelly the Sailor Bunny... Although, now that I think about it, perhaps we should have done this back in January to commemorate Popeye's first appearance in Segar's "Thimble Theatre" newspaper strip, on January 17, 1929... Or perhaps next month, to mark Popeye's first animated cartoon from July 14, 1933...

And though several places have claimed to be Popeye's hometown, the character was apparently created at Segar's studio in Santa Monica, California, not far from the pier where Segar loved to fish... (but seemingly Santa Monica is too hoity–toity to claim Popeye as their own)... JQ
